You have until 28 October to comment on the draft NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidance for the diagnosis and management of renal cell carcinoma in adults. The guideline aims to improve care by helping healthcare professionals offer people the right treatments and support, taking into account the person’s individual preferences.

One of the recommendations is the better use of biopsies to avoid unnecessary surgery – offering a biopsy for suspected renal cell carcinoma, where the cancer has not spread and kidney lesions are 4cm or smaller. Recommendations include considering biopsy for people with larger lesions where scans suggest it is benign or before the patient has non-surgical treatments that will destroy the lesion.

This is NICE’s first guideline on kidney cancer, so a broad range of input is important to ensure it represents all healthcare professional’s views. You can either comment on behalf of your organisation if it is a stakeholder organisation or comment as an individual.
